Product Details

Western Australia’s Great Southern region isn’t as well known as Margaret River, but it concedes nothing to it’s illustrious near neighbour in terms of quality, and for cool climate varietals, such as Riesling and Pinot Noir, it probably has the edge. Frankland River, Mount Barker and Denmark are the best-known sub-regions and it’s from the last of these; the more maritime Denmark, that this Pinot Noir hails. It has taken Australia a while to get the hang of Pinot Noir; virtually every good example comes from a new cool-climate region close to the sea and this is no different

Harewood Estate’s Denmark Vineyard was planted in 1988; pre-historic in Great Southern terms, but it was in the early 2000s that Howard Park winemaker James Kellie finally bought the estate, having worked for a number of years as a consultant to the previous owner. His Denmark Pinot Noir is a blend of the original Harewood Vineyard and the cooler, higher-altitude Apricus Hill vineyard, planted in 1995. The style bridges the divide between old and new world styles of Pinot Noir; the fruit is ripe without being jammy, and the structure is present without needing to be aged. More impressively, it’s astonishingly good value, especially at a 20% case discount!
